Botulinum Toxin Injections
What are they?

Botulinum toxin is a type of prescription-only medication known as a neuromodulator, which means it affects nerve cell transmission. It does this by temporarily inhibiting chemical nerve signals to certain muscles or glands. It is used in many fields of medicine for a wide variety of reasons and is a very safe well-researched drug. In cosmetic medicine it is most commonly used to soften muscle activity which is responsible for the formation of lines and wrinkles on the skin surface. The most popular areas for treatment are generally the dynamic upper facial muscles including the frown, forehead lines and crows feet. In addition other indications for treatment with botulinum toxin include jaw clenching, teeth grinding and underarm sweating (hyperdidrosis)

How does it work?

After an initial consultation we mutually decide on a treatment plan. A very thin needle is then used to inject tiny amounts of botulinum toxin into specific muscles. The number of injections depends on the areas treated.

How long does treatment last?

The effects of botulinum toxin last 2 to 4 months depending on dosage and individual metabolism. During this period the nerve cells gradually regenerate until all movement returns.

What are the risks?

Although generally safe (it has been extremely widely researched), occasionally some side effects may be experienced. These include bruising or pain at the injection site, headache &/or flu-like symptoms, redness, temporary facial weakness or drooping, allergic reaction.

Does it hurt?

The injections are with small needles but can sting a little, the procedure is very quick though!!

Post Care Advice

No vigorous exercise on the day of treatment (before or after ideally).
No rubbing the area treated for 4 hours.
No lying down for 4 hours post treatment.

DerMal Filler Treatments

As we age a series of biological processes result in our face displaying the visible signs of ageing. Of these, volume loss or displacement probably has the most profound impact. Dermal fillers can be utilised to replace this lost volume creating a fuller and more youthful look, softening fine lines and wrinkles or enhancing various features such as lips and cheeks.

What are they?

Unlike botulinum toxin, filler has no muscle-relaxing properties. It is hyaluronic-acid in a gel formation which is injected at various depths in the skin tissue to address a multitude of concerns.

For example a thicker based filler is used at depth to sculpt the cheek bones, but a relatively finer filler is used more superficially to treat small lines above the lip and around the eyes.

The fillers also contain lidocaine, a local anaesthetic to reduce pain in the area being treated. (Additionally, I use topical anaesthetic to numb the skin before treatment).

How long does treatment last?

Filler is broken down naturally over time (just like our own existing hyaluronic acid cells) and this process typically takes about a year. The amount required per treatment depends on a variety of factors, it is definitely not a one-size-fits-all treatment.

What are the risks?

Filler is a bit more invasive than botulinum toxin and as such comes with a few more potential side effects including bruising and swelling which will be discussed at consultation.

How does it work?

All injectable treatments at Cloud 9 are subject to a pre-treatment medical assessment and a comprehensive consultation. Individual requirements and results will vary.

Botox® is a Prescription Medicine containing 100 units of botulinum toxin type A for injection. It is used for the treatment of frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet. It should be administered only by trained medical professionals. Talk to your specialist about the benefits/risks of this procedure in appearance medicine. Cautions: People with defective neuro-muscular transmission disorders, infection at site of injection, glaucoma, pregnancy and lactation. Possible side effects include headaches, pain, burning/stinging, bruising, swelling or redness at the injection site, local muscle weakness including drooping eyelids/eyebrows, swollen eyelids, skin tightness, tingling sensations, itchiness, nausea and flu like symptoms. If you have any side effects or concerns speak to your doctor. You will need to pay for this medicine. Normal Doctors visit fees apply. Note: BOTOX® treatment lasts about four months and after this time further courses of treatment may be necessary. Speak to your specialist about your own situation.

Xeomin® is a Prescription Medicine containing 50, 100 LD50 Units of clostridium botulinum Type A toxin complex for injection. It is used for the treatment of frown lines on the forehead, lateral periorbital lines and horizontal forehead lines in adults. It should be administered only by trained medical professionals. Talk to your specialist about the benefits/risks of this procedure in appearance medicine. Xeomin treatment lasts about four months and further courses of treatment may be necessary. Cautions: Generalised disorders of muscle activity; Infection or inflammation at the proposed injection sites, pregnancy and lactation. Possible side effects: headache, pain, swelling or infection at injection site, local muscle weakness including drooping eye lids, lack of feeling & nausea. You will need to pay for this medicine. Discuss with your specialist if Xeomin is right for you.

Cautions: Presence of infection at sight of injection and glaucoma.
